Miami International Airport is located less than 8 miles (13km) northwest of Downtown Miami and was first opened in 1928 as Pan American Field. Miami Airport has more recently however become the busiest airport in Florida and last year they transported 39,467,444 passengers through their airport.
This airport has also been named J. Mark Wilcox Field as well as 36th Street Airport whilst it was merged as an U.S. Army airfield from 1945 for a number of the following years.
Miami, Florida is usually known for its lovely beaches, tanned beauties and trendy hotel bars or lounges. There is however much more on offer for tourists, Miami’s Wynwood Art District for example has many interesting pieces, collections and displays on show throughout the year. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is filled with decorative sculptures, fountains and ornaments and also well worth a visit. El Carajo Tapas and Wines which is located within a Citgo gas station offer an excellent and very unique dining experience.

Despicable Airport Personnel
I am ashamed to acknowledge there’s an American airport – MIAMI – that has personnel dealing with guests from all over the world and acting like complete A-holes to them. How dare you treat other human beings like this. Your management should be put in Guantanamo prison for life.
MIA Airport
This airport is the worst one I’ve ever been to in my entire life. We traveled with two kids and we all had to walk about 5 miles to find one chair to try to get some sleep in. Once we finally found a chair, we moved it maybe 10 feet and a security guard came and yelled at us to put it back. So, we tried to find some more somewhere else, and had to move again because they were scraping and buffing the floors with a loud vaccum going and playing Hispanic elevator music at 1 in the morning. It appeared that anytime anyone would actually be able to fall asleep, one or more of the employees would stand over top of the sleeping person and scream, walking them up. The only thing more rude than the employees were the police officers that were riding around with sirens going, yelling at one another! I slept with a metal bar in my shoulder from the stupid cheap chairs and was freezing cold as if they just didn’t want to invest in an actual heater. It was the most miserable night I’ve ever had!
Horrible Airport
Worst airport ever traveled. Had hours to make our transfer between our Heathrow flight to connect to our LAX flight but came very close to missing it due to extreme walking required. No kidding–we must have walked 6 plus miles. Had to wait an hour twenty just to gather our bag to go thru customs. Poor directions–would not even have known where to drop bag after customs had we not searched for someone to ask. Caution: employees may not speak much English. Total joke of an airport. Unless you are an Olympic athlete, avoid this airport at all costs. Seriously, even twenty year olds were struggling to make the walks. Why isn’t someone doing something about this horrible airport?
Your Tax Dollars Not Working
Immigration, TSA, and Homeland Security were terrible. They all need to be fired. I’m an American and was embarrassed, for the first time in my life, to be an American, because I saw airport personnel screaming at a woman in a wheel chair because she was asking questions. I also saw a Lt. Col. in Homeland Security scampering about trying to find out why the right signs were not in the right places. I mean, do our tax dollars really need to pay a Lt. Col. who runs around with signs and can’t even figure that out? Passengers from foreign countries were greeted by a mean, disgusting man who shouted at them not to use the escalator for no apparent reason. What a mess this place is. Avoid it at all costs.
Awful Airport
This airport is the worst I have been to. I’ve been to nicer airports in third world countries. The layout of the airport makes absolutely no sense and forces everyone to literally walk miles to their destination. Like things should be grouped together. There isn’t a way to get between some concourses without leaving the security area. It seems that everything is always temporary. All the security stations look portable and all the barriers are ropes and retractable queue banisters. Everything is always under construction and people are being diverted all over the place. Some concourses aren’t even used due to "construction". I wouldn’t mind the construction so much if they were actually cleaning up the layout and transforming the airport into a modern, first world, professional facility. But they simply seem to be sitting around making it even more confusing by using temporary walls all over the place. Some concourses even have a second layer on them that is always roped off and not even used! Stores and restaurants are scarce, especially beyond security. It is hard to find something you want without walking miles for it. I wish I was exaggerating. PA system is overused and polluted with announcements about parking, baggage, sketchy people and a welcome to the "beautiful MIA". Around the clock. I tried sleeping there once for a few hours – it was horrible. If they ever had to use the PA system for something important, good luck. I’m sure all regulars have learned to tune it out of their heads entirely.
Always Under Construction
I am a local and work closely with the airport so I don’t want to make public my name. MIA is a blackhole, constantly sucking efficiency, money and common sense. Land here from a European flight and you have to walk to the next town to get to Customs. Corridors are always cordoned off, signs of construction everywhere and it has been going on for the past 20 years. Access roads are difficult to navigate even with a GPS. Food is bad and overpriced. In fact everything inside the airport is overpriced all the way to having to shell about $4 to get a trolley for your luggage (something that is free in all European airports I’ve visited). The reason for this is corruption, as county politicians award lucrative business deals to those companies that give those politicians money in return.
One Star Is Being Kind
No doubt the worst airport in the world. It is so bad they must work at being bad.
Wish We Could Give No Stars
I do 125k to 150k miles per year and fly through MIA on most flights. It is indeed the worst airport I have used. Even with the train you have to walk what feels like miles to reach immigration. The lines are a mess, and waiting for baggage is a nightmare. If you take some time in immigration when you arrive to the baggage belt you need to walk around it to make sure the dopes working baggage have not pulled your suitcase off the belt and it is hidden behind it. Of course it is quite possible when you are walking around the belt they are pulling your bag off and putting it right where you just checked. They never announce that people should look behind the belt for luggage and I have seen many people miss connections. The food choice is lame. La Carreta, and Pizza for the most part after security. If I got excited about them adding Nathan’s that means it is pretty lame. Maybe when Shula’s opens things will get better. The worst part is the signs proclaiming that MIA was voted best airport. . . .by TSA I believe.
The Worst Indeed
I travel internationally for work, and there is no doubt in my mind: this airport is by far the worst of any city in "first world" countries. Immigration lines are huge, waiting for baggage can take hours, there is no WI-FI, the selection of restaurants is very limited, oh, and if you are lucky, you will be able to deboard your plane normally, as it is frequent to find that the plane’s gate is "taken". AVOID IF YOU CAN!!!

Horrible! I am a plane pilot. I flew all the way from Brazil and I got treated like a criminal… A bunch of Cuban refugees immigration officers treat other immigrants horribly and even U.S citizens. I´d rather land in a farm RWY than land in Miami again.

Good And Getting Better
I don’t know how people can say this airport isn’t wonderful. I haven’t traveled a lot, but I have the feeling that you only travel around the USA. In my opinion, MIA is completely clean, safe and organized. And it is beautiful, but who cares? The first time I went there, I had no problems, without speaking English or Spanish. Now I speak English, of course, and it still deserves five stars.
The Most Horrible Airport Ever!
I arrived there after an 8-hour flight at 7h20 in the mourning. I only had two hours and a half of sleep so I was tired and stressed. I was extremely lucky because my plane was the first one to arrive that morning, so there were no huge lines at the immigration, but the officers treat you badly and the first impression you have is that you’re some kind of criminal. After maybe 20-30 minutes they just pointed the way to the baggage claim carousels where I talked with the only nice person I met on the WHOLE airport: a janitor. I took my suitcases and moved to the customs where I just stopped because it was crowded and then some officer just took my luggage out of my side and right before he disappeared I asked him: WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?. Without an answer AND my baggage I just assumed they would transfer it to the other plane and left that horrible place. No signs advised me, but I got out of the security area and, on the terminal, I had to run through endless concourses where the signs would contradict the maps and the people would NOT speak English! Only SPANISH! After a long time I got to the entrance to the security areas where I had to line up and wait FOREVER only to be treated badly again by the officers on the x-ray and metal detector. After ALL this I finally got to my gate on time, I don’t know how… All this apart of saying about the extremely poor architecture of the airport that makes you walk MILES AND MILES trying to get somewhere that someone will tell you that was IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! Horrible… HORRIBLE! I think only Afghanistan airports are worse than this one… I DEFINITELY DON’T RECOMMEND IT! Tips: Do NOT trust the maps; they are WRONG! Follow the signs and ask people for directions. If you’re on an connection (like I was) be careful; don’t leave the security area because it’s going to take FOREVER to get back to it. And finally: don’t trust one flight-times display, find one or two more to compare the information because, sometimes, they’re WRONG!
Perhaps The Ugliest Airport I've Ever Seen
I arrived from LHR T5 to MIA last summer, and I have to say first impressions did not impress me at all. The area you arrive in was filthy dirty, with stains all over the worn carpet and the building itself looked like it could have used more than just a fresh lick of paint – either that or they actually wanted you to believe you were entering a prison. Then there was a VERY long wait at immigration. The officials were efficient but perfunctory and also rather rude without reason or cause. This is the first impression a first-time visitor gets to the USA, and somehow you felt like a criminal just for being there. Coming back in to depart from this airport was also a rather unmemorable event. However, the rest of Florida was lovely – I wouldn’t let an airport put me off it as it’s only a small part of the total holiday experience.
People Critizizing
This is one of the best airports in the US. Very welcoming to tourists from around the world. Very very easy to go through, people that criticized it because they don’t travel outside the US. This airport is the best in the states and better than some others around the world. I’ve been in 78 countries so far, so I know what I am talking about.
MIA
It’s a zoo. No other words for it. Plus, it’s a zoo that makes you walk for what seems like miles and miles, to get nowhere. Nothing is logically laid out, and there were no people movers the last time I was there: only a train far too small for its capacity and slow as Christmas. Planes do take off and land there with few incidents, however. That’s enough for 2 stars.
Baggage Reclaim A Disaster
The baggage reclaim carousels (other than international, which comes into a customs area) are on the bottom level. Stairs/elevators leading down are well marked, but you could walk for miles in narrow poorly lit dungeon to get to your carousel. The carousel number is usually announced on the flight as you land. But if you miss it, or if the airport whimsically changes it, you’re screwed, because there are NO information boards in the reclaim area showing which carousel is assigned to which flight.
Bad
The airport looked unsanitized and also it was small.
MIA Is Bad
No Services inside security, sparse and poorly laid out information signs outside security. The domestic terminal in San Jose, Costa Rica, is nicer than MIA. Now I know why I avoid Florida, in general.
Miami Intl Airport
Constantly under construction that never ends and sucks money out of the local taxpayers and travelers. Confusing layout which makes you walk a lot from where you are to where you need to be, especially when arriving and retrieving your luggage. Expensive shops and eateries – all there due to bribing of local politicians. Good parking facilities. Available flights to and from everywhere (though more expensive than out of nearby FLL).
