Gallery and Facts
East Midlands Airport (EMA) is located between Loughborough, Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. The airport offers flights to and from over 80 destinations across Europe, Northern Africa and the US. The airport handles passenger flights along with a great deal of cargo flights making. The airport is one of the busiest airports in the UK for freight cargo, second only to Heathrow in 2012.
Originally a Royal Air Force station, East Midlands airport is now a hub for commuters and holiday makers. It is also popular with amateur pilots as East Midlands Airport holds a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P520) which means it is available for flying lessons.
Plane enthusiasts will be pleased to know the East Midlands Aeropark, a museum of preserved planes, is located at East Midlands airport in the north west corner of the airport site. Anyone can go to visit the static display for a small fee which goes to the Aeropark Volunteers Association and inspect the old planes. Visitors can also watch planes at the airport coming in to land and taking off while enjoying a picnic on the viewing mound at the Aeropark. To get to the Aeropark you will have to drive and follow directional signage from the airport’s entrance. There’s a wide variety of Parking Options available at East Midlands Airport.
Please note that the airport itself does not have a direct rail connection, many people therefore use East Midlands taxi services to get to and from the airport. You can also use the airport guide to look at East Midlands Airport accommodation options if you are catching an early morning flight or travelling to the region for business.
East Midlands Airport Reviews (5)
We recently travelled for the first time through this airport and it has gone straight to the top of my worst UK airports list. Piece-meal development of the terminal over the decades since the airport was opened has resulted in a real shambles. Check-in with BMI Baby is very messy, not helped by lack of information. Very long walks to some of the aircraft parking stands (no travellators). On the return the long walk was entirely in the open air. Fortunate that it was not raining. Poor signing to the long term car park bus outside arrivals, made even worse by the darkness. The only reason the airport deserves even one star is for the very good and cheap, long term car park.
Disrespectful security bent on ruining vacations for everyone.
We recently travelled with Ryanair through EMA, linking with a flight to Bergamo. We found the security at the airport to be very strict. Although we had cabin baggage only each and followed all rules regarding dimension, weight, no liquids etc. We arrived at boarding gate to be told that handbags had to be put INTO cabin bag. This was difficult to do and involved taking everything out of handbag and then trying to squash it all into our small suitcase. After we got through security we saw everybody take their handbags back out! Unbelievable! We have travelled in the few months through Dublin, Edinburgh, Bergamo, Berlin, Gothenburg, Nimes and Carcassonne and have NEVER been asked to do this before. When my husband complained he was told in a brusque manner that he could leave the airport, he would not be allowed to fly. After a groveling apology he was allowed through. The unnecessary stress that this added to our holiday was significant and surely would not lessen any security risk. We are a (middle aged) couple with a teenage daughter. We shall never again fly through EMA.
We travel as a family of 4 adults, when booking our holiday we always make sure we go from Nema. We find the check-in very strict but also friendly. We travel 2 or 3 times a year mostly to the EU. In the last 12 years we have not had a delay. There are charter and budget flights. The food in cafeteria is ok but tables could be cleaned a little quicker. Other than that, keep the traveler happy, they will keep coming to Nema.

Use EMA because it is my local airport. Me and the wife fly about 3 times a year from there. It is a JOKE! I have complained in writing twice now about the way people are abused at security. They have to put their clothing into the same bins as other people have put their shoes (unhealthy); they have to walk barefooted (unhealthy); then on a couple of occasions, me and the wife have had body searches, without the guard changing their gloves, after searching other people (unhealthy); made to stand on certain marks on the floor whilst this is happening. Same as everyone else as (unhealthy). Like I say, complained. But a waste of time. Just get bog standard reply. Only gave 1 star because nothing lower.
