Arrival At Djerba

Well-maintained, recent airport, with decent duty-free shop and a selection of other stores. Bathrooms are clean and there’s plenty of room in the lounges. Security so-so – my daughter forgot that she had a bottle of water in her hand baggage, and nobody noticed, despite her bag going through the x-ray machine.

This was the worst arrival at an airport I have ever experienced. The cause is the insufficient number of immigration officers on duty. Is it normal in 2007 to force people to stand in a stuffy noisy hall for 1 1/2 hours just to show someone a couple of bits of paper? To add injury to insult, the screens showing which belts the luggage was on had been turned off, thus adding another wasted 1/2 hour while searching each belt one by one before finally discovering the luggage had by some miracle arrived and not been stolen while passengers were held up in the crass immigration procedures.
