FNA Airport
Lungi Airport's Good Potential
This former World War 2 RAF airfield now serves as Sierra Leone’s main International Airport. The reality is that user volume has exceeded capacity for many years at this facility. Major investment will have to be made soon to increase the size and capacity of this airport in line with current economic growth in Sierra Leone. Air-traffic is set to increase with new mining sector developments in the country like the recent oil and iron-ore discoveries. The river crossing from the airport to the capital city Freetown is facilitated by helicopter, car-ferry, hovercraft and water-taxi services which will all need to meet adequate internationally recognized safety standards which will also require investment. In all, Lungi has good potential but not without major investment.
Sky Handling Partner Sierra Leone Ltd have taken over, on 01Apr10, the Ground Handling and Cargo Warehouse activities at FNA. Heavy investments are under way in order to upgrade service to aircraft and passengers to international standards within the months to come. Ground Handling equipment has been brought in, extensive staff training is being undertaken and soon a computerized check-in system will be added. Airlines and their passengers have already noticed changes for the better. More are on the way.
