Punta Cana International Airport Reviews (36)
Definitely a 3rd World airport. Avoid it at all costs. Terrible management and operations. Go through Santo Domingo if possible. A new airport will compete with Punta Cana in the near future. It should be a better option as PUJ just doesn’t get it. I will never go back.
I’m worried about all this craziness I’m reading about this airport. Has these issues been resolved or has this airport got worse.
On our way back to the US their bag checkers took my wife’s hair dryer and said it was prohibited to carry on. He had a big grin on his face so I suspect he expected a bribe. No such luck, I told him to throw it in the trash. The gentleman behind me had freeze dried and vacuum sealed coffee, which was also apparently prohibited. Our first and last trip to DR. I make sure to tell everyone planning on visiting there.
I will never go to Dominican Republic again! Airport staff went through my luggage and took 3 perfumes, watches, camera and some other stuff. I realized that when I opened my luggage in Toronto. Be careful what you put in your luggage guys…
Pack all your valuables with you on your carry on if you are going to Punta Cana airport !! There are some theives that will go through your luggage after it’s checked. All of our luggage had been looked through….you can tell as soon as you open up your suitcase !! They stole my camera and a lot of jewellery from mine !! Sure wish they would have at least left my memory card….so sad….had so many photo’s that cannot be replaced :(
First time to Punta Cana but will be our last thanks to the staff at the airport !! Could tell someone had went through our luggage once we got home. Had 3 neclaces, and a bracelet missing(they never stole the cheap stuff I had bought there) But worst part was my camera, took that, left my case….wish they would have left my memory card…can’t replace them :( .Word of advice to your airport and country….if you want tourist’s coming to your country, QUIT stealing !!!
Just landed back in US – 3 of 4 of our luggage pieces had things stolen from them. Probably not surprising given the poverty there but it means we won’t be spending thousands there for future vacations. DR and Punta Cana government needs to get things under control with their airport staff before we will return. Shameful and disappointing.
Smoking at The Airport
We arrived to Punta Cana last week (on Feb 27) and I have one complaint regarding the airport policy. I am a non-smoking person but there are a lot of people who smoked inside the airport. It’s known very well that smoking KILLS but for some strange reason the priority is given to smoking people. Please prohibit smoking at the airport.
Dishonest Employee
When I went to purchase a couple of magazines at the airport, the woman at the counter swapped my card and said it didn’t work, so she started to write my card details on the computer! I knew there was something wrong with it, so I said "stop immediately and give me back my card" and made her understand that I suspected she was copying my details to make a fraud. She answered that she needed the details for something (not clear) and I insisted she give me back my card, she typed in a few numbers more and she gave it back to me. I was going to get some cash from my partner and she said "no no that’s OK – your card went through" and she made me sign the receipt that came out of the credit card machine. Her solution was that she would put the payment as "cash" on the system, implying that she needed my credit card details for some internal reasons…. Bull***t if you ask me. Needless to say, I immediately blocked the card.
Stolen Items
UNREAL! I got through US airport security with a small, non-pointed umbrella, but then I wasn’t allowed out of Punta Cana airport with it. The security guard took it and said I could check it if I wanted to keep it. Before I even had the chance to decide if I wanted to check it or protest that she was even taking it in the first place, she chucked it in the giant trash can next to the belt. Completely uncalled for and rude. I was really angry. These people are thieves. Be careful about what you bring with you. I’m just glad I had the sense to grab my bag when she took the umbrella. Had I given her the opportunity, I’m sure she would have stolen my mother’s expensive jewelry from inside the front pocket.
Disorganization
Scheduled to depart at 2pm. Arrived at airport at 11:55am and got on line. Finally reached check-in counter at 1:45pm! Love Punta Cana but don’t know if willing to go through such aggravation again. Flight left at 2:30. This airport and its staff suck.
Theft At The Airport
Seven of us were vacationing at a beautiful resort from Feb 28-March 7 2012. We were very disappointed at the clerks and customs agents. They stole my jewelery but left my box in the suitcase. They stole my sister’s camera from the suitcase as well; and overweighed our friend luggage by 6 kg so she had to pay $120.00 up front. When we arrive at Toronto airport we had to transfer to another flight, our friend had to re-weight her luggage, to our surprise it was 1 kg under weight. She told the clerk about Punta Cana Airport, the clerk smiled and said "yes we get a lot of complaints about that airport". So all you people beware…
Security Going Shopping
1 Bic lighter per person is acceptable according to the allowable items list that we looked at. My purse cleared security fine and I later realized I had 4 Bic lighters in my purse. My husband emptied his pockets and put his belongings, including a Bic lighter in the container provided. Once he passed security and was putting his belongings back in his pockets, security reached over and took his lighter – NO FLY NO FLY and put the lighter off to the side. After clearing security my husband made a comment about them taking his lighter… the gentlemen in front of us, who had purchased a torch lighter (for lighting cigars) while in the DR told us they gave him his lighter back….. go figure….
Security Shopping List
Beautiful location to visit but I don’t think they want you to leave. I almost ended up in a 6 x 6 cell block. Exaggerating of course but scared shitless due to the fact security would not allow my husband to be with me. They separated us before we boarded the plane with no reasoning. It started as we entered through the security check; we had brand new rechargeable batteries (approx. 20) and they discarded them right in front of me saying NO FLY, NO FLY. I was shocked as this is not an item posted on THEIR list of items not to be carried on. I was shocked and angry. I know these were only batteries but it was the principal. As we were leaving the terminal to go on the tarmack my husband was approximately 3′ in front of me and pressured and pushed him to continue as they separated us with no reasoning. There were 3 other couples and myself. We had no idea what was happening as no one explained anything. About 90% of the passengers were loaded on the plane and then we were escorted on the tarmack in front of the plane and directed into another area. I tried speaking with the security lady but was only told luggage. Why my husband could not be there was not explained just that I was to be taken and escorted to this area to have luggage examined but not really told anything. When there it seemed as though they were looking for rum cause they asked the guy doing the search and found nothing except for a battery charger. I made the comment that this is no longer any good because they just took all of my GD batteries. I was very angry and then to get on the plane and hear the announcement that there are to be NO abrupt passengers on this flight. I turned to my husband and laughed and said GEE I WONDER IF THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT ME. Let me think….. YAH. AMAZING TRIP AND CULTURE EXPERIENCE BUT TAKE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF ANY VALUE WITH YOU ON CARRY-ON. MAYBE MEDICATION ONLY. THEY CERTAINLY HAVE A SHOPPING LIST. The funny thing is they let me keep the charger that is no longer any good to us.
Security
I have real issues with this airport. 14 trips to Punta Cana and these folks appear to have a "shopping list" of things they want for their own use. It’s free to the taking because they are security and can. So far everything we have had "taken" from us has not been on the list of items that are forbidden. 2 folding umbrellas, fingernail clippers, 2 infant tee shirts a new sealed bottle of Coke bought in the airport AFTER we cleared security then was taken prior to entering the airplane during an additional hand search of carry-on. Punta Cana is a beautiful place but the airport security will destroy their tourism if stealing doesn’t stop.
Security
They took my daughters hair dryer and her friends hair dryer and straightening iron. They also took safety razors.
Security Search
Beware! All metal objects are taken off you. Every umbrella is taken from you if found in your carry-on. Very rude and nasty people in this area. They take items for their own use.
Security Thiefs
This may seem like a small thing to complain about but we just arrived back from the DR. We had a wonderful and Beautiful trip, our first time in the DR. The Punta Cana airport is beautiful for the country it is in and the atmosphere that it portrays. My beef is the security at the carry on baggage area. My Daughter, 14, was not so much as scared but puzzled with the attitude of them and they way you are treated while they are checking your baggage. We know they have a job to do but they should not take their authority to the extreme. Especially when these are the people we trust to get us in and out of the countries safely. My daughters carry on was striped from top to bottom, and every little item in her bag was removed. We missed one bag with small liquids in her bag(which was still in a ziplock bag) which was no big deal so we told the security girl just to chuck it cause it was not of to much importance any. It seem as if she was looking at each item with way to much interest for such items….they were baby’s lotion, a solid deodorant. 2 30 ml of aloe vera, a 15 ml bottle of nail polish, institution shaving stick and bojo oil….the bojo oil she let us keep cause we said it was medicated. The shaving stick I could understand cause it had a blade in it. The deodorant I could not understand cause this is solid not liquid. With the nail polish, she looked at another security guard and they said it was up to her…it looked way to strange if you ask me and I thought to myself that she was going take this lol. The security girl was kinda snotty and shuffed the bag back at my daughter and told her to fix it herself. My daughter was bewilder considering this is her first out of the country experience. The security girl walk over to the garbage can and tossed my daughters deodorant, aloe vera, and the baby lotion in the garbage the nail polish and intitution stick was put in the garbage also but kinda of put to the side. We we not gone pass 5 feet when I glance back and the security girl took the nail polish and the stick out and proudly turn to her coworkers shaking the bottle and pocked it…..they are not there to shop. It is a small think but my daughter was put out and I also….as I walked away I told them it was uncalled for and she placed it back in the garbage. I should have went back and poured it out cause for sure she took it again after we were gone…..so don’t be surprise the would steal (shop) for what ever they like….Security is one big joke no safety was in her mind….Even with the language barrier she Knew i was pissed with her and her attitude. We went to the next area for showing our passports and the girl asked us if they had give us trouble and shook her head. She said that not all are untrustworthy… I GUESS THIS SECURITY GIRL GOT HER SHOPPING DONE FOR THE DAY!!!
Stolen Camera
My camera was stolen in this airport 5 years ago. I went to the Dominican Republic with my marriage ceremony with 40 family members were in the same plane. unfortunately, I could not see my camera after I got out of airport. I was lucky, too. My insurance company paid for my camera which decreased my frustration. I had decided not to go to the Dominican Republic after this trip but we had a good marriage ceremony. Our 40 family members liked it, too.
Theft From Luggage
I too had the grave misfortune of trusting people. Especially, after such a wonderful vacation in the Dominican and meeting so many wonderful people. They rifled through my suitcase and took my jewelery which was inside clothing. I am thankful that it wasn’t expensive stuff. It was sentimental items for sure. You think you could trust your luggage at an airport….apparently I am too trusting of the human race. I have learned my lesson for sure….I just hope it was someone who needed it a whole lot more than me!
Theft At Punta Canada Airport
Just got back from a great vacation in Punta Cana. Checked in a fairly new suitcase and it was not until we got home that I noticed the lock was still intact but the zipper had been forced apart. My camera was taken and the camera case left behind. All the zippered compartments had been opened as well as my make up bag and cosmetics bag. Fortunately I have travel insurance to replace the camera and suitcase. I will be contacting my travel agency tomorrow. Just another reminder not to be too trustworthy!
Carry-on Items
The final security search of your carry-on bags at the gate before getting on plane was ridiculous. All passengers exiting the gate to the aircraft must submit to a physical search of person and carry-on items. This last search, done after two x-ray scans of your baggage and carry-on items and previous walk through of a metal detector. The security people confiscated our umbrella (collapsible Totes Stadium $30.00) and an unopened package of 4 AA batteries. Seems like a good way to grab whatever they want or you can’t get on the plane. Be prepared to be treated like cattle in this poorly run airport where the international rules are not followed.
Airport Security Theft
Keep your valuables in your carry on when you leave Punta Cana, that is if you want to keep them. My fault for having faith in people.
Don't Lose Sight Of Your Luggage
Within a few short minutes of our hotel bus’s arrival at the Punta Cana airport, our luggage was unloaded and placed neatly on the sidewalk, next to the bus. A porter politely asked us which airline we were travelling on (Air Transat) carefully placed our luggage on a handcart and then quickly disappeared in the absolute chaos of thousands of other travellers waiting in the 10-12 lines for all the flights that were also scheduled to leave within the same hour. I immediately contacted the airport’s security and told them that our luggage was taken by a porter. About 20 minutes later, they found this uniformed porter rifling through our luggage in a bathroom stall. We were concerned not only with what he may have taken FROM our luggage, but also what he may have put INTO our luggage for us to perhaps smuggle for him. For this reason, I STRONGLY urge all travellers NEVER to lose sight of their luggage in this or any airport in any city.
Security? I Think Not.
I had my laptop stolen out of my suitcase after it was checked at the desk. It is amazing it lasted a week at a resort where they warn you on the staff yet when it arrives at a secure airport it is stolen out of a locked suitcase. Another passenger made it through security with a pocket full of change and 2 lighters, 1 was metal.
A Zoo
Terrible. Horrible. The worst airport I have ever been to.Thatched Roof. I went there, and I was in gate 7. We had to walk half a mile to get to our plane and we could of been at gate 4 because the others were empty.
Lost Our Bags - No Help
Pretty sure our bag was stolen at PUJ upon arrival, no one told us where to pick up our bags from 7 baggage claim areas, complete madness and confusion for all the travellers. Filled out a baggage claim report and no one has been able to track it since. Most certainly partly Air Canada´s fault but how does a tracked bag just disappear? Very unhelpful airport staff.
Punta Cana Airport
This airport looks 10 times better than the airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Stop Complaining
I think people need to wake up to the idea that they are not visiting a fully developed country and recognise that the facilities at Punta Cana airport are definitely adequate for the short time you are there, the airport is definitely the most aesthetically pleasing one I have seen throughout my worldwide travels. I would never advise anyone against flying to this airport. however I do agree with Mr Amaral, we have visited PC airport 7 times in the last 4 years and never had a problem, however this time batteries were removed from our baggage, we asked why and were told they were permitted, this has never been the case before, so we were not happy about that.
Horrible
Very small airport, outdoors type of thing. No air conditioning. Bad experience, my flight was late a few hours! Horrible airport and hated Punta Cana even more.
Airport In General.
Remember you’re in a third world country, so the airport is no LAX. 2 terminals. Terminal 1 is older, kind of outdoors and more for the America’s destinations. Terminal 2, is newer, air conditioned, nicer restaurants, but for overseas travelers (France, Germany, etc.). Very pricey, but clean and nice. Currently undergoing major renovations, so patience is needed.
Picture Of The Airport Of Punta Cana
heres it is one picture of the airport of PUNTA CANA from BILL
(puj)airport A Lot Of Traffic
A lot of traffic at this little airport on the Friday night. Also a very big problem with the control at the Departures Hall. All in all, the place too crowded.
Carry Electronic Devices On Person
Be careful where you put your little electronics while going through the search at the Punta Cana airport. I had my ipod stolen out of my carry on luggage (which was in a second zippered pouch) by the clerk who searches the luggage for prohibited things. I would suggest you keep it on your person and put in through the screening in your pocket and let it get screened from the bins.
Punta Cana Exotic Airport
Nice little airport in the east of Dominican Republic, with a very exotic cachet and with a very exotic tower!
Disgusting place. Stole everything from my locked luggage. Don’t leave anything of any value in it. You forget after spend time in secure resort, but it is a 3rd world country.
